Radisson Blu Hotel Alesund Reviews
Nice sea view! Nov 07, 2010
Ålesund is a beautiful city in incredible surroundings. Radisson Blu Hotel Ålesund is located near the ship port at the end of the pedestrian zone, which is a nice and quiet area. It is also conveniently located near the airport shuttle.
The rooms are standard European sized and have modern furniture and decoration. A lot of the rooms have an amazing sea view. The bathrooms are tiled and have heated floors, which is nice and cozy. The rooms and bathrooms are also nice and clean. I just wish that the rooms had been equipped with tea/coffee facilities. All the rooms have free WI-FI. If you don´t have your own laptop, there are two guest PC with printers in the business centre for free use.
There is no room service at any time. And no fitness room either, but they do have a deal with a local fitness centre called Tren Ålesund where you can work out for free. Tren Ålesund offers a variety of aerobic classes as well as a fitness room. It is a 10 minutes walk from the hotel.
The breakfast buffet is not very big. In the summer the breakfast can be quite a night mare. There are big tour groups staying in the hotel and the buffet can get very crowded. The hotel restaurant don´t really have the capacity for so many people eating at the same time, so it can be a struggle to find a table. Spoons, knives, napkins etc. always seems to be missing as well.
The restaurant has the best chefs in the area and people come from far away just to eat here. I have not tried it myself and can not recommend anything. It´s quite expensive. Mains start at $50. For that price I would rather eat at a nice local restaurant. The hotel restaurant is facing the sea, so you can enjoy a nice view while eating, but that does not make up for the lack of ambience.
In the summer the water side terrace is open. It´s a nice place to watch local boat traffic and twice a day calls of the Hurtigruten coastal express ships at the adjacent quay.
The lobby and reception doubles as a bar, a combination which does not create a good atmosphere. The reception staff is nice and friendly, but can not be trusted when it comes to wake-up calls and messages. One time I stayed there we had a 6 am pick up from the hotel. At 5:30 they called my room and asked why I was not in the reception. I told them that I had a 6 am pick up. I had just got up and was far from ready to leave. It turned out that they had forgotten to tell me that the pick up had been moved to 5:30. Road work was going on and the tunnel to the airport was closed (the airport is on an island) and we had to take a boat which took a bit longer. Not a good way to start the day!!
Last time I stayed there the remote control in my room was missing so I called the reception. I was then told that it was a problem because the girl I spoke to did not think that they had an extra one. No one ever came to my room with a new remote control. The hotel was far from busy, I´m sure they could have borrowed one from another room! It seems like the reception staff is doing their best, but they never really get it right.
If you arrive by car, you are up for an extra bill. The hotel has no parking facilities, but you can park at a public parking place next door for NOK 130/USD 22 a day.
There are plenty of hotels in this little town. I would recommend you to look somewhere else.

Radisson Blu Hotel Alesund Overview
This hotel is in a fantastic location from which to enjoy Alesund and the fjords, right on the waterfront and walking distance to all sights and other transportation. The hotel is located in the city centre in the Skansenkaia harbour area overlooking the Norwegian sea. It is walking distance to Brosundet Sound, Alesund Storcenter and the Sunnmore museum, some of the most popular tourist attractions in Alesund. Alesund Vigra Airport is 18 km from the hotel and the airport bus stops in front of the hotel. The Hurtigruten coastal liner quay is located adjacent to the hotel and the catamaran terminal and bus terminal are all within a few minutes walking distance. The restaurant is on the ground floor and adjacent to the waterside so provides magnificent views of the ocean and mountains with a stylish yet informal atmosphere. In the summer guests can dine on the terrace outside enjoying the spectacular scenary. The hotel is a modern white building with many windows yet built with the style of the typical housing in Alesund with a spiral and blends well into the area by the quay. The lobby is medium in size with a reception desk and seating areas decorated in a traditional Scandinavian style. There is also a lobby bar offering a warm atmosphere to relax and unwind.
