Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour New York Reviews
Behind the Scenes at Radio City Music Hall Nov 12, 2009
Radio City Music Hall is probably New York City's most famous performance venue. The theatre at Rockefeller Center has been in operation since 1932 offering variety shows, movies, seasonal spectaculars, and the signature Rockettes precision dance team.
The Stage Door Tour begins in the balcony of the auditorium where the guide explains the history and background of the theatre. The egg shape design provides excllent acoustics for all areas of the theatre. The orignal show format was a feature film with a Rockette revue, but now all types of musical performers appear at Radio City.
Tour members learn much about the Rockettes and their role at Radio City. The team has performed at the theatre since its beginning, but the dance team predates Radio City. (I wasn't aware of that.) You meet a Rockette on the tour and can ask her questions and have your picture taken with her. She was certainly gracious, though there were few questions. (I asked about her dance training prior to becoming Rockette.)
The tour incldues a few public areas decorated in Art Deco style and a few behind the scenes areas such as the rehearsal hall and costume and makeup rooms.
Much is explained about the innovative stage machinery, turntable, and four hydraulic stage elevators that operate over the massive 144 ft wide stage. (The hydraulic lift system was copied for aircraft carrier elevator design.) However, the tour group is not taken back stage.
I very much enjoyed the tour and recommend it whether or not you see a show at Radio City.
The tour lasts about one hour and is $18.50 per person.
