A Spectacular Spectacular at Radio City Nov 13, 2009
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular has been a holiday tradition in New York City since the opening of Radio City Music Hall. The annual show opens in mid-November and runs to December 30. If you are in New York at holiday time, I recommend seeing the show.
The show centers around the Rockettes, who perform eight different dance routines (with costume changes). Most famous are their Toy Soldier and New York at Christmas numbers. But, in addition to the Rockettes, there are classics (selections from The Nutcracker), additional singers and dancers (other female dancers in the show must be shorter than the Rockettes), a Santa Claus skit, and a Natvity pageant with live sheep and camels. The show concludes with the entire cast in a finale and then exit music is provided by the twin console Music Hall Grand Organ. The vaudeville and musical revue roots of the Spectacular are apparent and it really puts you in the mood for the holiday season. It's definitely a show for the whole family!
