Raccoon River Park Des Moines Reviews
Beach in the Heart of Des Moines Jun 04, 2011
I guess if you're in Des Moines, and you want to go to a beach, Raccoon River is your best bet--at least, I haven't found any other good beaches in this land-locked city.
Raccoon River Park boasts a 700-foot-long beach, which is pretty respectable in my book, but the sand is pretty rocky, especially if you're used to bigger beaches on the shores of large lakes and the ocean. Blue Heron Lake, where you swim, has been designated a no-wake zone, and the water depth is slow, so you can get pretty far from shore and still only be chest deep in the water. There are no lifeguards on duty at the beach, so swimming--if you're into swimming in lakes--is at your own risk. There are bathrooms for changing, and a snack shop right off of the beach.
