Cozy place Jun 23, 2010
Another lovely little gem in Copenhagen is the restaurant Rabes Have or Rabes Garden. Rabes Have is named after Merchant Rabes, who opened the place as a Liqueur distillery back in 1678. Since then there has almost been a bar at the place but today it is mostly used as a lunch restaurant for business people that works at Christianshavn.

The current building was built in 1802 as an almost identical double house with two flats in each floor. In 1850 the brewery Rabeshave was established the buildings together nearby building in Wilders Kanal 4, some 300 metres away. In 1855 it was the biggest brewery in all Christianshavn. In 1851 we know that there also were a small grocery shop in the houses, but since 1885 it all were changed into a bar, which had a stone laid backyard where it was possible to play an early form for bowling. The building has been protected since 1988.

The restaurant is especially good in serving unspecified Danish smørrebrød (sandwiches) or a fried beef tartar otherwise called a Parisian Beef in Danish. It is a place where you can enjoy a cold snaps to you herring and you probably stay there a bit longer that you planed in the first phase.

Besides that the place is always totally packed on Saturdays with lunch hungry and beer thirsty happy people, so either arrive early or book a table; otherwise you have to wait long to enter. I adore the rustic rooms with their low ceilings. It is like stepping back in time, when the harbour was full of tall four masted ships and traders on the docks.

The look inside is heavily influenced by the maritime surroundings and the old ancient times. In the summer you can sit outside in their backyard that is cosy, quiet and a true Christianshavn oasis.
