RB Transient House (RBTH) Coron Reviews
Beware of banshee hosts/caretakers Feb 24, 2016
I'm not even sure where to begin here. I would say this guesthouse offers a lot of surprises. Good and mostly bad. I didn't set any expectations because it's a 500 Php (about 10 USD) a night accommodation but still it was really bad.
Our stay with this transient house was all arranged online and we opted to go with an arranged tour rather than DIY. At the airport, there was no staff to meet us, just a bunch of drivers with cards holding up the name of guest houses. I guess it's the norm here. We saw the name of the guesthouse so we went with the driver. There were other people there from other lodges and guest houses.
When we were dropped off by the van, again there was no staff to guide us to the place. We were just dropped off on the side of the road and the driver told us to follow a certain path. And so we did. We walked a few meters and then suddenly we had to go through wooden planks, unevenly arranged so you could easily hurt yourself if you're not careful. It turns out to be located in a swamp area so if you fall you'd fall into black mud with garbage, pointy branches and only heaven knows what. So if you're not an adventurous person this would be a huge turn off. We learned later on that it's considered a slum area.
When we got to the transient house, the caretaker received us well and showed us to our rooms. To be fair, the building is clean which is a contrast to the outside which is littered with garbage. The rooms are clean so we didn't really mind. They offer fan rooms only, no AC. There were three toilets with showers. We were told we can cook in the kitchen for free so that was great since we do plan on cooking our own dinner. The caretaker was very friendly, chatty and overall a good person. There was not a hint of the banshee in her.
We would've stayed there for the whole duration of our vacation had the caretaker been a good host. She was really exceptional at first but at the very first hint of misunderstanding she started putting on airs, talked very rude and finally resorted to shouting. She probably thought we were a bunch of college students as none of us really looked beyond a typical student having a vacation. We asked her to look into the cost of private tour for us. The operational word being look. She ended up booking us without final approval and the worst was not informing us. As the first day of our tour ended without news of the private tour we asked her to look into for us we booked ourselves with the tour agency who handled our tour.
When our first group got there and told her to cancel the booking she got angry and started raising her voice. When I got there she was in full banshee mode. A representative of the tour agency was summoned and we thought everything was settled. We decided to move out immediately. We didn't even think of getting a refund since we only spent a night, we just wanted to get away as fast as possible. She followed us in the kitchen and started raving and started threatening us, she'll get us banned from tours and call the police. Our friend started to cry in frustration. We were just too shocked. She even called in the relatives of the owner of the guest house.
It was a complete nightmare. Thought the guesthouse itself is livable I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone at all because there is a chance their staff would ruin your vacation in this paradise of an island.
