Often closed out, but can be fun on the right day Oct 09, 2008
RAT beach isn't infested with vermin, but rather stands for "Right at Torrance", so named because it is right on the border between Palos Verdes and Torrance or Redondo Beach and Torrance depending on how you look at it.
I surf here a lot just because it's convenient, but the conditions are really fickle. It's best on mixed up swells and early in the morning. Otherwise, if the swell is just in one direction, it's probably going to close out. Although I've had some good afternoon sessions there, usually the wind picks up by 10AM and the onshores blow everything out. If the conditions are good, they can be really good. Burnout (the spot near the concrete jetty) can get really fun barrels. And even when it's peaky, usually the waves still break fast and give a fun ride. |
