Firstly this place isnt on Queen Street (despite the clue in the title!)It's on Fort Street - still a stones throw away from the Viaduct Harbour & the closest Hostel to the ocean.

Overall I guess I cant really complain - though our twin room really did feel like a prison cell.

There is an enourmous commom room with internet cafe, as well as a pool table and television for communal use. Kitchen facilities on each floor (this place really is huge!)and showers/toilet facilites close to the rooms.

Beware of long stays - potential to suck your soul dry.

If you can choose betwee ACB and Queenstreet Backpackers you should definitely go to Queenstreet. It's very basic but it's a good place to stay. It's not so huge and not so crowded and it's still in the middle of the city centre of Auckland.

How much one enjoys their stay often depends on the characters staying with you. I've stayed in hostels where one night , one can have the time of their life, yet next day people move on, new people arrive an everyone keeps to themselfs. Than next night it could change again. Sociable, non snoring people, anything negative or positive characteristics of fellow travelers is luck of the draw. In Auckland, Bamber House. Clean, friendly staff, great rooms to hang out in,

Queenstreet backpackers has friendly staff and its in a good and central location. however, everything is quite old and worn out and could really use a renovation. also the rooms on the street site get a lot of traffic noise, rooms on the back side are quite dark and noisy because of all the aircons on the opposite wall.
but overall its ok and all rooms are cleaned daily; have been in much worse hostels :)

Hey, I'm going to NZ by myself in late August and want the first hostel I stay in (in Auckland) to be a sociable one! Any tips on where would be good to stay in terms of meeting people as a solo traveller?

Thanks
Yarms
