A Newcastle institution Nov 17, 2017
This is a Newcastle institution and has been operating in this same spot for several hundred years. On a Sunday morning the road along the Quayside is closed to traffic and the stalls are set up. The nature of the goods on sale may have changed somewhat over the years but local families are still drawn here in search of a bargain as they always have been, although increasingly these days are joined by visitors to the city.

In the past you might have seen such novelties as escapologists, monkeys dancing to organ-grinders’ music, and pets such as mice and budgies for sale. No longer … but some typical traditional stalls remain: fish and seafood caught locally in the North Sea, cheap plastic toys and pseudo designer clothing, random electrical and household items. These tend to congregate at the Tyne Bridge end of the market, while further down, near the Law Courts, you will find the more modern and upmarket newcomers – hand-crafted jewellery; artistic photos of local landmarks such as the Angel of the North and the various bridges; rustic loaves and fancy cup-cakes; leather goods and decorative items for the home. And if you are hungry there is plenty to choose from. On a recent visit I spotted Polish sausages, locally-farmed roast pork, Middle-Eastern wraps, hot-dogs and classic burgers, and more.

The market gets going at about 9.30 and lasts most of the day, though some stalls seem to close mid afternoon. The nearest station is the Central Station (mainline and Metro trains) from where you need to walk east past the castle and down to the Side.

Quayside Sunday Market Oct 07, 2012
Had noticed a sign about the market over the previous days ( turned out to be a notice for cyclists to dismount on a Sunday going along the Quayside), but hadn't thought about going until my wife noticed it from the hotel.

Market is on every Sunday from 9-30am until 4pm and was much bigger than I expected. Ran from just about the Millenium Bridge all the way along the Quayside to beyond the Tyne Bridge. Most of the way along it had stalls on both sides of the walkway.

Stalls can be rented from the council for 12 week periods, or folk can turn up on the day and get a pitch from the Market Inspectors, so it must change about from week to week.

There was a big variety on offer from the stalls. Plenty of fast food stalls, but plenty more with art work, wood carvings, ornaments and household goods. A lot as well with old fashioned/home produce confectionery, baking and jam as well as a butcher.

Some of them were just souvenirs and kids toys, but it was all very mixed and made it interesting to walk along, as you never knew what you would find next.

Easy enough to get to walking from the city centre, or if your feeling rough (or just lazy)the Q2 Quaylink bus service from Central Station will take you there.

Was nice to spend a bit of time in, helped by the wether that morning, but could give you something to do if you're up early on a Sunday, or have an early checkout from your hotel and time to kill.

(belated) congratulations on the featured review. I agree with what you wrote about the market - I've always felt sorry for the vendors who have to brave the rain and cold on bad weather days.
