What's in a name? Aug 13, 2015
Qdoba is a chain of fast food Mexican style restaurants across the United States. It's quite common to see one of these places in airport terminals if you've spent any time traveling in the USA. I've seen them many times and never stepped foot in one, but always wondered what the name meant. The word Qdoba actually appears to have been made up by a marketing group hired by the company and has no meaning. It sounds Spanish I guess, but really isn't and it's kind of like the food here that appears to be Mexican, but really isn't.

There are burritos, gumbo, nachos, quesadillas, tacos and taco salads, with some locales having breakfast. The food is made to order up at the counter and there is some variety to have it made the way you want. They say "It's all about countless combinations, all for one price, including and especially guac." I assume that means quacamole, but unsure about the 'including and especially' part. It's no Chipotle, that's for sure, but I only tried the breakfast burrito, which was edible and provided some sustenance, so can't judge the entire menu. It's a wholly owned subsidiary of Jack In The Box.

There are some that say it is Aztec for "womanly", but if so it may be mere coincidence, as others confirm from company spokesman it is just a made up word. Who knew?

I had no idea it was an invented name. Sounds rather Aztec.
