Bali's sacred Bats Sep 24, 2008
( free fee as donation entree )

About seven kilometer from padang bay or roughly one and half hours from kuta, the bat cave is tucked in the inner compound of temple called goa lawah ( which means bat cave ) and is located in the border of the klungkung regency and Karang asem regency.

The temple is not big yet it is extraordinary since the temple is very old i n age and one of teh island's nine special Sad Khayangan Temples. The shrine to shiva in the entrance of this temple has been work shipped since around 1000AD. Resi markandya a priest from java found his holy place which is designated to honor dewa Maheswara, The God rules in the southeast of the island.

Visiting goa lawah is much better in the morning when villagers come for prayer, but sunny afternoons are good too. The most exciting thing is the cave next to the beach which is home to thousands of bats who create an unearthly experience when they leaves the cave at sunset. The cave also home to giant legendary snake.

Bat cave Temple in South East Bali Apr 04, 2007
Pura Goa Lawah(Bat cave Temple in Balinese) is situated on the main road from Klungkung to Amlapura, right on the coast,West Padangbai,3km East of Kusumba.

It is a popular attraction in Bali:people driving along the coast stopped there to make offerings and every day, there are religious processions and rites mostly associated with death are held there.

This Temple, founded in 1007 by Empu Kuturan from Java, is one of the nine Temples called Kayangan jagat(directional Temples) which protect against the devils ,the island and the Balinese.Goa Lawah T. protects Bali from the SouthEast.

Inside the small Temple with shrines, meru, bale is a natural open mouthed cave inhabited by thousands of black fruit bats, protected by the Government.Approaching the cave, you can easily smell the lingering odour of their dejections and hear their squeaks.

-the cave is connected by a tunnel of 30 km long to the main Temple Pura Besakih

-a giant legendary snake,Naga Basuki which protects the earth's equilibrium lives in the cave, eating the bats

-the water of the Ganges(India) flows through there.

Wear a sash and a sarong to enter the Temple(cheaply rented),try to avoid the sticky hawkers, small fee for parking, vendors sell drinks and snacks outside including grilled corn.

Across the road, next to the beach is a picnic area with views in the islands of Nusa Penida and Lombok if clear day.
