Located in the northeast of Pittsburgh and near Route I-80, Punxsutawney direves its name from the native word of "ponksad". Punxsutawney is known for the infamous Groundhogs day, February 2, which became famous from the Movie with Bill Murray "Groundhogs Day".

On February 2, (Groundhog Day) of each year, the town of Punxsutawney celebrates the beloved groundhog with a festive atmosphere of music and food. Punxsutawney's Groundhog legend pre-dates the area's first white settlers of the Delaware Indians. They shared in the Punxsutawney "groundhog" roots with their own Indian version of "legend and lore".

Originally, Punxutawney, PA, was a campsite halfway between the Allegheny and Susquehanna rivers. During this time it was inhabited by the Seneca and Iroquois Indians.

According to the original story of the creation of the Groundhog of the Delaware Indians the "Lenni Lenape (who were the original people) began life as animals in "mother eath" and emerged centuries later to hung and live as men. Thus the Wojak, which was carried over to us as "Woodchuck", came to be recognized as the "grandfather" of the earliest known inhabitants of the area.

Each year citizens of the world trek to Gobblers Knob to take part in the festivities to see if Phil will see his Shadow or not. Legend has it if Phil sees his shadow the winter will be short and if he doesn't see his shadow then the winter months will last 6 weeks longer.

You can find some seriously crazy stuff in Northern Pennsylvania. This was a small trip I took from my grandmother's house near Pittsburgh to our cabin. I do this all the time, I just happened to have a camera with me this time around.
