5/1/07New Video Uploaded - The second image is actually a video of a ceremony we saw at the Dzong in Punakha where the monks were carrying the ashes of a monk to inter him inside of the temple.  You can hear and see one of the monks whipping the ground to get rid of evil spirits.  If you get motion sickness watching, blame the director (Cindy in this case...) Sorry for the messed up entry for a bit - the photos were out of order, unfinished and the internet is really slow in D...

Relaxing in Punakha

The next few days were spent in Punakha. Here we did some short hikes through villages and rice fields. Saw some more famous temples and monasteries, and got to spend some time wandering through town. Here Jordan and I got some beetle nuts to try. It's a sort of stimulant/drug that everyone chews. It's taste isn't bad but you have to constantly spit this red goo which makes for a most unpleasant site. Upside is that it made me feel like I had 10 cups of coffee and an enjoyable body high. Bhutan is a small Himalayan Kingdom nestled in the lapses of Eastern Himalaya. It has remained closed to the out side world for a century soley of mountains, swift flowing rivers, thick jungles and so on. But to day Bhutan remains known to the out side world as the Last Himalayan Shangrila.... Bhutan has become a hot global spot for most of the endangered species of Flora and fauna. Tourism is a booming business and inflow of tourist is ascending year after year.

I will never forget Punakha because of the betelnut.  Our guides, all Bhutanese people in fact, love betelnut.  The chew it all day long if they can (our guides aren't allowed to, but they go to betelnut bars at night).  It's a stimulant, kinda like ciggarettes.  In Thailand only old ladies chew it, but in Bhutan there is no such social restriction.  It's red and gooey and it makes you salivate...so you spit worse than a camel.  A downside is that, because e...
