Punakha Overview

Punakha is located in a fertile and beautiful valley at 1350 meters/4430 feet. Thirty years ago this little town was only a dzong (fortress). The small size of the place is surprising considering the primordial role that Punakha has played in the history of Bhutan and the fact that it was the country┬┤s winter capital for 300 years. The first king was also crowned here in 1907.

The highlight in Punakha is no doubt the beautiful Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 AD. The Dzong is situated at the junction of the Mo Chhu (Mother river) and the Pho Chhu (Father river). Opposite the large dzong is the Dzongchung (the little dzong) which was build in 1328 AD.

Only 4,5 km outside Punakha you will find the Dho Jhaga Lam Lhakhang. In Yambesa, 7 km from Phunakha is the huge Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. It is located in an idyllic rural countryside, high on a hill on the opposite side of the bank of the river. A 30 minutes climb from the road will take you to this chorten, which is well worth a visit for its paintings, which are beautiful and presents an incredible complex iconography.
