Punakaiki is a small community on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, between Westport and Greymouth. The community lies on the edge of the Paparoa National Park.
The Pancake Rocks are a popular tourist goal at Dolomite Point south of the main village. The Pancake Rocks are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts though a number of vertical blowholes during high tides. Together with the 'pancake'-layering of the limestone (created by immense pressure on alternating hard and soft layers of marine creatures and plant sediments), these form the main attraction of the area. The Pancake Rocks are presently explorable by a number of walkways winding through the rock formations, parts of these wheelchair-accessible and others carved into stairways up and down the rock faces. State Highway 6, the only through road on the West Coast, passes through the town.

After a good breakfast we did pack our backs and walked down to wait for our boat who would bring us back to Picton. Before this the owner Ron took us in his boot to show us a little bit from the surrounding waters. The big boat came at 10:15 and left with all of us. It took us 1,5 hour extra to get to Picton, because it loaded and unloaded several suitcases at several places. Even our tourleader didn't know that. We had a quick lunch now in Picton and left for a long trip. We had a...

I had the amazing opportunity to study a semester abroad at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. From Feb. 24 until July 3, 2005. During that time I traveled all over it and got hands on experience on its amazing culture and sightings. It's like a hidden paradise!!! It has everything you can possibly want, from amazing outdoors activities to great night life. Enjoy!!

Well it was my first day with the tour group. They're a varied bunch ranging in ages from 18 to 68 a 50 year difference. The 68 year old, Sai who comes from Canada is a real character. He'll be up every morning at 6 to take photos and will walk further and faster than anybody else.
On friday we left Christchurch to head for Punakaiki on the west coast. On the way we crossed the Southern Alps and stopped at a location where LOTR (Lord of the Rings) was filmed. It wa sthe sword fight sce...
