Great value Aug 23, 2008
Andrew and I had travelled from Picton to Punakaiki to see the Pancake Rocks and the Blowholes. We then went to the information centre and had a few accommodation suggestions given to us. Although we knew this was one of the dearer ones we liked the sound of it and decided to check it out.
On the beach side of the road there is the reception area, a restaurant, bar, motel style units with carparking and a guest laundry. On the other side of the road there are 3 more sets of units. The 2 sets closer to the road do not have parking facilities so what happens is you leave your car in the car park on the beach side of the road and walk through a tunnel that goes under the road. The 3rd set of units on that side of the road are further back and do have carparking. The units on the beach side and then the units closer to the road are the cheaper ones and of course the units further back, which are higher up the hill, are a bit dearer. They have great views. The downstairs ones have vegetation to ocean views and the upstairs ones of course have better ocean views. The units are eco/enviromentally friendly. We went to the reception desk and said we needed a room for the night and asked prices and availability. They only had 2 left, 1 was the beachside unit downstairs that we could have for $130? or we could have one of the units in the furthest set downstairs for $150 normally $250 or we could have it for $165 including a buffet breakfast in the Waterline Restaurant. We took that one! Tea & coffee making facilities and bathrobes supplied. We were able to sit and look over the ferns etc and onto to the ocean. Even when I walked to the guest laundry behind the other units, I walked down steps surrounded by plants and a little waterfall. We also decided to have dinner in the restaurant and it was so busy we couldn't get in until 8.30pm. It was a lovely meal. They do cater for wedding receptions either in the bar area or the restaurant and wedding ceremonies can be held on the beach with the verandah of the restaurant as an alternative incase of bad weather. The other option for the ceremony is in the tunnel under the road! We also had breakfast in the restaurant which was good because it meant that we could view the ocean while having breakfast. A lovely spot. It is only about half a kilometer walk to the Pancake Rock & Blowholes. Part of the New Zealand 2008 travel blog |
