The worst Tom Yam Goong ever Feb 02, 2012
Whenever I travel to Thailand, I try mostly these 3 dishes: Spicy glassnoodle salad, Tom Yum Goong and Son Tam and try to find the best restaurant that's possible. This restaurant boasted to have the same price since 2002 with a new menu of 2012. It wasn't that cheap since it also added service charge which made it more expensive than the Rock restaurant. I thought it was a cooking school so the food must be great but I was mistaken. It was the worst dish ever. There were 4 shrimps, 2 chilli peppers, 1 kaffir lime leave, 1 purple onion and that was it. It was so sour that it turned my stomach the moment I took a sip of its broth. It wasn't broth. It was water and lemon. I returned it to the kitchen and asked for some sugar to make it better. It didn't ameliorate my soup, so what I could eat was 4 shrimps. It cost 109 baht for 4 shrimps. It wasn't spicy either. They threw in 2 chilli peppers and didn't bother to do anything with the chilli. I was hungry and furious. Other dishes were quite humble as well and didn't seem to be rejected. I saw other customers leave their son tam half done. I cannot speak for other dishes since I haven't tried them but I will definitely never go back there for Tom Yum Goong.

Modern Thai Restaurant that retains the essence of Thai cooking Oct 19, 2010
Pum's daughter has recently opened up restaurants in Mulhouse, France and Manchester in the UK and if her cooking skills are as good as her Mom's I'll be checking the Manchester one out pretty soon! Pum's came to my attention as she runs a cooking school on Phi Phi where I desperately wanted to take a class but unfortunately couldn't quite stretch to it so I opted for a meal in her restaurant instead. It proved to be an excellent compromise; the restaurant itself is nicely kitted out in modern Thai d├ęcor which gives the air of an upmarket establishment, and Pum herself greets you as you enter and take off your shoes as she ushers you to a table. Each of the staff wears a cool t-shirt that tells you who they are in relation to Pum (when I visited both staff working in the kitchen had t-shirts that told me they were family). The menu however is very traditionally Thai but with Pum's own little twists, I opted for a Thai Green Curry (the menu helpfully suggested which meat or seafood goes best with each dish) with chicken and a refreshing Chrysanthemum and rum cocktail, a little odd to start off with but you get used to it. The curry was the best Thai Green Curry I think I've ever eaten (both at home and in Thailand) and then Pum treated me to a complimentary desert which consisted off a coconut soup with banana and ice cubes which was just delicious. The meal itself was pretty cheap considering the quality of both the restaurant itself and the food served and if I'd have been staying on Phi Phi longer I'd have gone back again and again.
