The arena in Pula is one of the finest Roman amphitheatres left in the world. Everyone thinks of the grandeur and history of the famous one in Rome, but this lesser known one in Pula is pretty decent too! Architecturally, it is the most complete one left in the world and is in the top 6 for the amount of spectators it can hold (around 22-23,000 people). The interior is well worth the visit and is rather amazing to see. Down where the animals were kept before, they have used this to construct a little museum. The contents really aren’t that amazing, but it’s a great little add on to the tour. The arena is not just a tourist site for history fans though. In the summer especially, concerts have been performed here. Past distinguished guests include Pavarotti, Il Divo and Elton John. The only downside to the place is the vicinity; right on the main road. The traffic isn’t that loud as such, but it lacks the historic charm that the cobbled paves conjure up near the one in Rome. A definite highlight for Istria, and the only highlight of any interest in Pula!
