Puits Couriot/Parc-Musée de la Mine Saint-Etienne Reviews
Worth a visit, not many tourist. Jul 09, 2015
It is an exciting and emotional journey to visit this Mine. Imagine in the dark and deep underground with the humidity and hot weather like 40 degree and full of noises and you will need to breath the carbon in. The journey will follows the footsteps of the miners through their daily lives, as well as the evolution of techniques and expertise by visiting the buildings of the only preserved mines in the Saint-Etienne basin which was in service until 1973.
Once you have toured the old «washbasin», you can go right down to the bottom of the pits with the cages, and then take the mining train to discover the gallery which has been restored to lifelike quality. When you come back up, continue exploring by discovering imposing machines which brought the site to life and the other heritage areas in the site (lamproom, extraction machine room, power room etc.) and from December 2014, the new exhibition rooms. The museum itself have a guide to visit down into the Mining area where they used to work in the dark and humid for about 1h15 minutes then you will have a free walk to look at the area. The museum itself classified as National Historic Place. It was finished the operation in 1973.
The museum is open every day except on Monday mornings and on 1st January, 1st May, 14th July, 15th August, 1st November and 25th December.
From July to August from 9.30 to 12.30 (last guided visit at 11.00) and 14.00 to 18.30 (last guided visit at 17.00).
The rest of the year from 9.00 to 12.30 (last guided visit at 11.00) and 14.00 to 18.00 (last guided visit at 16.30).
If you passby Saint-Etienne and wish to see something not a tourist trap, you can visit this place. I totally recommend you.
