Puglia Otranto Reviews
mixture of relaxing vacation and small day trips in the area Sep 26, 2011
Puglia is a great part of Italy to visit.
we arrived to Bari, rented a car in Eurocar. there was no problem with driving, but i advice to take GPS = without that i would be lost - so many small roads. of course you can travel on high ways but then you don't get to see anything - it is better to take smaller roads.
that evening we drove from Bari airport to Matera - about one hour away, but easy to drive.
we stayed in small B+B, it was cheap, nothing special, but great location - walking distance to SASSI beautiful old houses.
we also visited local market - where we found all the goodies - bread, fresh fruit and were part of the real Italian atmosphere.
people were nice and friendly - it was great and funny communication - you speak to them in english - they understand - but they reply in italian. so either if you want or not, after several days you remember some of their vocabulary :-)
in the afternoon we traveled to Otranto = where we paid in advance for 10 days accomodation in Alumini Smile - really clean cabins - with small kitchen a small front yard. close by was a family owned farm shop, where we bought all fresh ingredeance and made our own food - so yummy - even if you are not a good cook - you cannot spoil it - because the fresh past, tomatos, basil, fish - it cooks itself :-)
that day we spent on beach ALIMINY - it was kind of crowded - but th water nice and clean.
next day we took a day trip to Gallipoli - where was the local huge fish market - a place where you can see funny italian atmosphere - i wanted only some small fish - to taste - in the end - I walked away with a full bag of fish for 10euros - so we had fish every single day.
it was nice walk around the town while sunset - so pretty and cute town.
on the way we stopped to several beaches - so many to choose from. the fish market is - i think - every wednesday.
one day we also made a trop to Leucca - which i also a nice town - with a lighthouse - by the coast are also so many small beaches - most of them are rocky - but you just have to explore and find the best fit for you, but the water is pure clean everywhere.
then we also took a trip up north to Lecce - and before we stopped there we made a beach stop at the Torre del Orso - kind of crowded beach - but nice for a change - lively.
Lecce is nice - but crazy compare to Otranto or Gallipoli - I would be totally lost without GPS.
on the way back to Bari - we stopped in Monopoli and Polignano - if you have good timing and time - try to make it for sunset - amazing.
once we got to Bari - we waited for the local bus - returned the car and by bus got to the center - where we had booked our B+B - again it was great location - so we walked around the city. it was night when we arrived.
the next day it was very hot - so instead of walking around hot streets - we went to to city beach - of course it wasn't as clean as the other beaches - this particular one was extremly croweded - but we found a rock on the side - so we avoided the mess and enjoyed the hot sunny day- it was nice. and in the evening the streets were full of people again. it was great to see everybody out - young, old, locals, tourist - it was so bublly and lively :-) LOVED IT...would go back anytime....this southern part of Italy is still not distroyed and arogant - that's the place where you can find friendly pepole, great food, coffee....just everything :-)
Ps: regarding cost - if you want to make it expensive - you can...but if you want to safe some money, there are ways how to do it also! we were weren't so tight on budget but also didn't want to spend money for unnecessary things. so it is up to everyone.
