A change from small town to Resort town. Sep 25, 2012
This major seaside resort on the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico was founded back around 1850 and has grown with the new tourist trade to more than a quarter million population. The area has evidence that the area was inhabited as early as 580 BC, but not a lot is known. The 1950s and 60s saw the city begin its rise to what it is today. Gringo Gulch began to develop as an expatriate neighborhood on the hill above the center of town, populated by writers, artists, and rich Americans looking for a quieter and more peaceful way of life. And as the tourists came, the number of hotels and related services has grown also. Today there are more than 100 hotels and hostels in the area. The workforce is now near 50% of the population relating to the tourist industry.
