Nature at its finest May 02, 2011
this is a nominee for the 7 wonders of the world. one pays around Php700 to go through the underground river --which is worth it because you cannot see anything like this in any part of the Philippines. A tourist guide comes along with you and drives the small boat which you will be riding in touring inside the cave. there are many interesting formations inside. However, one cannot tour the full length of the river since it's really very long. some say beyond the usual tourist stop point are more beautiful sites in the cave..with stalagmites and stalactites so alive that they shimmer in the dark.

Underground river Jun 21, 2008
The underground river at Sabang is one of the two longest underground rivers in the world if it is not actually the longest. It is about 4.8 kilometres long the part you can navigate but on the trips to the river you will only go in 1½ kilometre. On the canoe trip you will see the different rock formations in the river only using one torch in the front of the boat. Some people will tend to be annoyed by the boat men's constant orders to the one carrying the torch like torch up torch down torch right torch left - and so on.

Inside the tunnel you will see birds going crazy in the dark flying every direction and some bats sleeping from the roof of the river.

You should be prepared to get a bit wet inside the river since the top of the river is leaking and they don't appear to be calling repairmen in to fix it - hence wear a waterproof jacket and something to put your camera in if you don't want it to get too wet.

You can walk to the canoe spot where you get the canoe - apparently it should be some great walks through the jungle with a lot of wildlife - but it was raining too hard when I went hence I went with a boat sailing to the canoe spot just opposite the place where the river flows into the sea.

You can get the river in two different ways. Either you go there on a daytrip from Puerto Princesa or you must go on an overnight trip to Sabang - because there are no connections back to Puerto Princesa in the evening.

The daytrip is the easy solution where you call a tour company - there is lots to choose from all offering basically the same tour and the same price 1.500 including lunch, pick up at hotel and transport. The daytrip is the easy way to go but you will not have a lot of options to do the hikes in the area - not that you will like to if it raining like when I went. General advice does not go on this trip during a typhoon - it is not optimal.

The overnight trip should be cheaper and you need to go on one of the morning jeepneys leaving from Puerto around 7 - there are several places to stay in Sabang hence you should have no trouble finding a fairly cheap accommodation and arranging a trip in the afternoon - then you can stay the next morning at the beach or doing the walks if you like before taking a afternoon jeepney back to Puerto.
