Puerto Lopez Mateos is on the west coast of The southern end of Baja California Mexico and is one of the best spots to whale watch in Mexico. The season to see the whales goes from January till the end of March. The whale watching area is called Magdalena Bay and is a narrow bay which is protected by the barrier island, Isla Magdalena.
The town of Puerto Lopez Mateos does not offer much in the way of lodging but there are a few restaurants in town. The annual Festival del Ballenato celebrates the birthing of gray whale calves takes plece in early February.

I arrived in Loreto a day ahead of when my sea kayak trip was to start so I decided to go see some sights, I decided to go for a day trip to go see a grey whale winterig spot on the west coast of the Baja peninsula. It was an interesting drive in the tour van through the hilly desert country on the way there to the town of Lopez Mateos where we had a lunch and then went out in a boat to go see whales.
