Hello All,Alarm clock worked...  Where are the Aleve?  I stumbled out of the room to get some water in the hotel's courtyard and met the taxi driver.  He had been commissioned to drive the four of us to the boat dock at 5:30am for our 6am boat the Santa Cruz.  The previous night's drinking had taken it's toll on three of us, and the good money was not on us all waking up in time.  The driver had apparently dealt with this situation before, and was knocking on doors to...

My Arrival in Galapagos (or how I came to be riding with the airline crew of AeroGal)
posted by:

It's hard to believe that a little more than a month has passed here in the Galapagos.  I've become so spoiled with animal life and my expectations on dives or snorkeling are unmatchable.  I am afraid that the Galapagos has made me into an arrogant snob about flora and fauna.    Like all good (ex)consultants, I could divide my time in the Galapagos into finite eras.   25% of the trip as an English translator <20% working 13% diving 50% living like a Galapag...

Back from the Galapagos

I am now back in Puene 3 staying at Marianas.  I am still suffering from an infected throat which makes me cough violently without warning.  This illness has plagued me now for almost three weeks and has made life very uncomfortable at times.  As usual  it is pissing with rain in Quito and there are nightly thunderstorms.  Apparently in May it will improve.   A few days before I returned from the Galapagos, Maria’Jose, the 13 year old daughter of Mariana, was...

Galapogos Islands

So we head over to the Galapagos Islands which is a 2 hour flight from Quito, from the airport you have to catch a bus, a ferry and another bus to get to the main town of Puerto Ayora. We get there and sort out some accomodation and have a feed/beer with a new friend Alan and Steph before going to try and sort out some trips. Have a look round town and the waterfront. Quite cool, even round town you see marine iguanas, pelicans and frigate birds. The next day we met Alan and Steph for breakf...

Arrived in the Galapgos Islands!
posted by:
Mar 07, 2006 - Sep 18, 2006
After much trepidation and confusion at Quito airport as to when the flight was leaving, we arrived in the main airport of the Galapagos Islands, on Baltra Island.  A short ferry ride to Santa Cruz with our new ship-mates and a spot of lunch before heading off to a reserve where some giant land tortoises romed and then onto the Charles Darwin Research station where Lonesome George resides.A quick trip to the supermarket for some alcoholic supplies for the boat and then we had dinner...

Los Angeles, CA to Quito, Ecuador. Stayed in Ecuador for one month going from Quito, to Tena/Misahualli in the Amazon, to Guayaquil on the coast, to Salinas, to the surf town of Montanita, back to Guayaquil to fly to the Galapagos Islands. We saw Isla Santa Cruz and Isla Isabella...truly an amazing place. Returned to Quito after 8 days in the Galapagos and then hopped a bus to Otavalo for the famous Saturday market. Ecuador is an amazingly diverse country and more people should travel there!

When you dive for so long with the same company...you're gonna get in some repeats.  This highlight of this was diving with these cool kids from California who just graduated from high school.  How lucky to get to go to the galapagos and scuba dive as a senior trip?  Ba-boom!!!

Galapagos Islands - Day 1 - Tortoise spotting on Santa Cruz island
posted by:
Jul 11, 2006 - Sep 03, 2006
It was good to finally be heading out to the islands after all the running around I'd done to organise the trip.  Even better was the fact that my plane and boat tickets were still valid despite being in my daypack when I emptied most of a bottle of mossie spray there!  The act of getting tourists to their boats is a pretty well-oiled machine, meet you at the airport (I'm glad I thought to buy an underwater camera here, better late than never), shuttle bus to the ferry, 10 minu...

Arrived in Puerto Ayora without a plan but did the rounds of the boat operators and soon got a spot on a 7 night cruise leaving on the 8th on YV Free Enterprise. Cruise went to most of the inner islands including: Rabida, Bartolome, North Seymour, Espanola, Floreana and Santa Cruz. I limited myself to 3 dives because at $70 each they were a bit expensive... saw a school of hammerheads diving at Gordon Rocks which was the highlight. The other dives were at Bartolome and Gardners Bay but nothin...

Welcome to my lovely circuit around the Latin world. I designed the trip around seeing a few of the rare wonders of the world that few people ever imagine experiencing. I hope you enjoy a vicarious thrill by following my short trip through the west coast of our Spanish speaking neighbors.
