Tourist Mecca is Matt Molloys, bang in the middle of the main street (where I grew up, incidentally). Matt used to play for The Chieftains so the emphasis is on traditional live music and there's something on there every night. The front half of the bar has an olde world feel to it and although i've said it's tourist mecca it's not overly hackneyed or 'oirish' and there tends to be a pretty good vibe in the place.
For the younger crowd, there's Cosy Joe's down the street on the opposite side which seems to get larger every time i come home which is tastefully enough done - tends to have pumping music on the weekends. I used to hang out a lot in Heneghan's up the street but it was revamped about 8 years ago and they completely changed the atmosphere - it used to be a bit of a hippy/grungy place and now it just seems a bit soulless but still gets packed on the weekends. A nice little pub on James Street is Blowsers. I think there might be a different name over the door but everyone knows it as blowsers. Red shop front at the top of the street. Management seems to have changed or something but it's not as friendly as used to be. Part of the Xmas 05 travel blog |

We made our way back to Westport for some late lunch. Westport is one of Ireland’s most popular holiday destinations, be it for a weekend end or longer stay. It overlooks Clew Bay and is situated near the base of Croagh Patrick. One of the few pla…pubs, all providing a friendly ambience. It got some nice features like the Octagon and the beautiful and unique boulevard tree lined known as The Mall, running parallel to the Carrowbeg River. There are plenty of shops, pubs and places to eat to keep… Into the West... Part 2 |

Sunset had begun by the time we reached Westport, and being in the West, it could only look all too beautiful. We reached our hostel, as cheap as it can come what with all of us boyz and a few more being bunged into one big dorm of about 3…pub crawl. I went with Matt for dinner at a Chinese rsnt, and we headed direct to Matts Malloy where we met the rest of the group. What seemed to me as a bunch of rude quiet people initially changed drastically, in this one night… Ahoy Matt Molloys'! |
