Public Transportation in Quito Aug 13, 2009
First time in Quito I was impressed by the well organized public transportation of the city. Although the traffic can be bad, the public transportation is good.
Trolley: They don't have a metro but have trolleys called Metrobus and the 3 lines would take you mostly everywhere. It's cheap, they have stops and a special line in the streets, so they won't stopped by the traffic. The only think is that they get crowded often, so you have to be aware of your belongings. There are no fix schedules, but they come and go very often. Bus: there are different bus lines, but they are well organized, new buses and painted same color. They are cheap and there are no bus stops - like in Lima - they will stop where the passenger asks, hehehe. They have signs saying where they drive Taxi: they all are yellow and have a taximeter. Just make sure they are using it. If it's late at night or they are going to a far place, you'd have to arrange the fee. My recommendation is not renting a car in town, just if you are going to the surroundings. Driving around the city can be frustrating and public transportation works good. I managed to take the really cheap public
transportation back to relatively close to my homestay and cab it back. I’ve noticed that big Latin American cities
like Lima and Quito have very polluted air.
I chalk it up to all the fumes-spewing, diesel-running vehicles.

It is about 15 miles north of town, and I was armed with information on how to reach the place with public transportation.
I left the hotel at around 10:30am, and commenced to walk, trolley, bus, walk and bus it up to the sight for almost two hours. Upon reaching La Mitad Del Mundo I paid the admission fee and checked out the area… Touristy stuff around Quito. |

The public transportation is pretty good with three lines running north-south along different main streets and the city is narrow enough to walk east-west without much problem. The bus terminal is another matter. The Quito bus terminal is one of the more depressing places… In the valley of Quito |

…one.
Lovely and easy to get around in this city with the old part on the south and newer part in the north, it has a good network of public transport great sights but as I say some time we experienced rain and certainly it was colder then on the coast.
A 2 nd reason to get to Quito was to be able to visit “el mitad del mundo” (middle of the world) actually… last stop for south america |
