Ptuj is the oldest city in Slovenia, started its first chapter in the ancient times of the New Stone Age. Ptuj is also an important wine producing city with a wine growing tradition of more than seven centuries. Ptuj has one of the best-preserved and well presented castles in Slovenia. Ptujski Grad (Ptuj Castle) stands at the top of a steep hill in the center of town. Planned around a baroque courtyard, the castle houses a museum that exhibits musical instruments, an armory, 15th-century church paintings, and period furniture.The Ptuj Regional Museum, in a former Dominican monastery, has an outstanding collection of ancient artifacts and coins, as well as Roman statuary and tombstones. The museum offers guided tours in English.
Ptujska Gora is a very popular point for hikers and cyclists, above all because of the beautiful view on the Dravsko polje flatlands and hills of Haloze. The most known part of Ptujska gora is the church, which stands on the peak of the 352m high hill and is visible from afar. In the immediate vicinity, the Terme Ptuj Health Resort offers the beneficial and healing effects of its thermal waters.
Don't miss the carnival in February - that means 10 days of party behind the masks and on sunday you can watch a parade on Ptuj's streets that last for few hours and there is ussualy more than 1000 traditional and nontraditional masks.
