Overijssel is a province of the Netherlands in the central eastern part of the country, and borders to Germany in the east. The province's name in both Dutch and Latin means "Lands across river IJssel". The capital city of Overijssel is Zwolle.

The name Overijssel was used for the first time in 1528. Before that it was:‘Oversticht’.

Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle were powerful Hanseatic towns that together with the knighthoods of Salland, Twente and Vollenhove formed the ‘parliament’ of Overijssel. The mayors of the large towns and the members of the knighthoods governed the province, which had been part of the DutchRepublic since the rebellion against Philips II (son of Charles V).

After a short occupation by the bishop of Munster (1672-1674) Overijssel got a different form of government, giving the stadtholders more power. The patriot resistance against this, led by Joan Derk van der Capellen tot de Pol, eventually resulted in the BatavianRepublic in 1795. A centralist government arose and the country was divided into departments. Overijssel and parts of Gelderland and Friesland became the ‘Department of the Old IJssel’.

In 1801 the old provincial boundaries were restored. After 1813 the Provincial Council consisted of representatives from the knighthoods, the three large towns and the rural regions.

The five large cities are: Zwolle, Deventer, Enschede, Hengelo and Almelo.

Sunday 25 mai 2008, first meet up with Patricia in Giethoorn! We met eachother in Giethoorn, a nice place where we both like to come. It was for me and also for Patricia the first meet-up with an TB. The weather was not so great, it was a little bit raining and to cold, so we went to the fanfare, an great haunt in Giethoorn! The same name as the film that was taken there 50 years ago! After that we walked through Giethoorn and used our lunch in 't Vonder, after that we went to the Smit's Pav...

Today my sister Barbara and I drove to Enschede in the east of The Netherlands. A friend of ours had bought a house there last august and it took us this long to go see it... (This is even worse when you think about the fact I was living only 20 minutes drive away until very recently!) The house was beautiful, built in the 1920's which I know for some of you is very old...:-) We then walked around the city of Enschede. As it was Saturday there were markets in the central square where you cou...

Inge, a friend from work, had invited me to Enschede for the day.  Enschede is way up in the North of the Netherlands, not far from the border, and costs a whole 30€ to get there from Utrecht.  It's quite a distance!  There's a nice train ride up, though - you get a lovely view of Deventer on your way through the town.  And even before then there's a patch of forest that looks like the New Forest that's quite attractive too.  I had a really nice journey up, and Inge...
