Gent is to me one of the best cities in Belgium and therefore I keep on coming back. Ghent (in Dutch: Gent) is the fourth largest city of Belgium with about 250.000 inhabitants. It is not as big as Antwerp but bigger than Bruges. It is also less famous among tourists than the often praised Bruges.
However, for me Ghent is the real diamond of Flanders and Belgium. In a unique way, Ghent has managed to preserve its medieval power while keeping up with the times. The city centre al...

Well, it was time to keep on moving. Holland was waiting for me. Last year I did the Inca Trail and met really nice Dutch people. Once I met them online and commented about my plans of going to Europe. Maike told me: "Great! You have to stay with us, when you are in Holland!" We have been in touch through emails while I was backpacking, but this time I just called her to let her know I was in my way. She gave me some directions to go to the town she lives and that was it. I had a plan ;...

It didn't take me too long to get to Gent, my new Romanian friends left me just at the tram stop and I walked into the centre of Gent to meet up with Bas. Quite clearly Bas is one of the coolest Belgians around, a great friend I've had the pleasure of meeting through Hospitality Club.He took me to a park where we sat and talked about anything and everything and as the sun was going down we spotted a juggler. Steve Irwin style we snuck up on him, crikey, he's a beauty! Well he had some pretty ...

These pictures tell you something more about the rural area where I live and they give you a look on the nearest town (about 5km from where I live). There is a high population density in the Flanders (Belgium), but I live in one of the nicest and most quiet places of the Flemish part of Belgium (the Flemish Ardens)

The Oude Kwaremont in Kluisbergen (also called the village of artists) it is well-known for cycling competitions; it was climbed for the first time by the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) in 1974 and was climbed for the 31rst time in 2006. The road is paved with cobblestones and asphalt and you climb from 18 to 111 meters height for an ascent of 2,2 km.

Well as everything is so close in this small country I live in I set out again with Rhiannon to visit another interesting town Gent or Ghent depending on whether its written in French or Flemish. After arriving at the train station and walking for 20 minutes looking for this beautiful city we began to wonder what was all the rave was about because we hadn't found anything of interest yet, we finally stumbled across the centre and were very impressed. Gent is situated on a small river and...

We liepen naar de auto en gingen met een noodgang naar Gent over de snelweg. We lieten Brussel links liggen.

Castillos, monument...

I took the train from Antwerp over to Gent. I thought of all the cities I visited in Belgium, I liked Gent the best. I just loved the feel of it. It too was on the water, and there were boat tours that I did not get to do. However, the buildings just inspired me here the most. There was even a castle that I spent some time in, and it cost me like a euro. It was a great place to wind down my last day of travel. Check out the pics!

So my point of entry was Amsterdam, and from there directly to Mieke's in Belgium. The one night in Japan was awesome, and the lack of sleep on the flight great. Finally i arrived.
