Danger is all relative and every place has its dangers. Colombia has the FARC and kidnappings as part of its ongoing civil conflict, Quito has its muggings and petty crime, and Banos has a more natural danger, its volcano. Located 7km from the crater of Tungurahua, which erupted two weeks ago and rained ash down on the city, Banos is in a less than ideal location when it comes to its safety. At the foot of the volcano and surrounded by deep river gorges and other mountains, the...

Quito, Ecuador -› Banos, Ecuador -› ...
I took 4 hour bus from Quito to Banos for about half of the cost of a pint from Melrose. This is a beautiful town in a small valley surrounded by steep forested mountains and volcanoes. But interesting to think about how safe overall I felt in the jungle, and since I´ve been in Ecuador.
We had a great breakfast early in the morning: crepes (pancakes), yogurt, fresh fruit salad, etc. all food that I love. We started the day by hop...

Quito, Ecuador -› Ambato, Ecuador -› ...
This was a group up for exploring and not sitting around, so, no sooner had we touched down in Quito than we were off. Destination was the Ambato market. (Well, we had to get there if we wanted to see it, as it is held only on Mondays.) As we drove south from Quito to Ambato, Cotopaxi could again be seen in the distance, shrouded in clouds.
Ambato is famous as the largest open-air market in Ecuador. There were souvenier goods for sale, but, by and large, the market was for the local peo...
