A couple of gringas on a Cuban adventure!

On my last day I experienced Cuba at its most frustrating.  After eating a delicious Cuban breakfast at our casa and saying our sad goodbyes to Sergio, Miriam, and their daughter, we departed for the airport.  We checked in with the airline and got through customs with no problem.  I wanted to get rid of as much evidence as I could of me being in Cuba before returning to the U.S., so I spent my last few CUC$’s on a book (Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "One Hundred Year's of Solitud...

Oslo - Havana, this will be a long day.       I have had a dream; se Cuba before Castro dies.  Last autumn I realised I had to hurry when Fidel got health troubles.     I got the opportunity to be part of a group bicycling for 14 days.  Our route is from the Havana in the North to Vinales in the West, via Pinar del Rio to Cienfuegos, Trinidad and Sancti Spiritus in the East and back to Havana.   &nb...

Wicked cars, music, dancing the heat and Fidel, unsurprisingly focused on the Revolution, the centre of gravity. I started in Havana, a booming city, rich with history. The tourist trail is well marked and due to heavy regulation is difficult to avoid. I kicked around the city for a few days visiting the sights, the museums, galleries, bars, bars, bars, a cigar and rum factory, generally I made myself fairly comfortable in cafes enjoying the scene. Trinidad, a small historic cit...

We got up late, went down to the town again and wandered about getting lost because we looked at the map. Had great craic trying to find where we were. The best craic though was when we were in one particular shop and we were getting hounded for the 7 millionth time so I started speaking to Rab in a language I made up and he started speaking to me back in the same language (ok his own version) then I started to ask the guys in the shop questions in this new language. It was deadly. We jus...

To start, a few things that will be useful for those planning trips to Cuba: [a] make sure you take a GOOD guidebook with you (we used the Lonely Planet guide which had just been published).  While older guidebooks will be somewhat helpful, things seem to change very fast in Cuba and a number of people we met on our travels complained that their guidebooks were completely unhelpful. [b] Cuban tourist coaches/buses for travel around the island are AMAZING; just don't make...

An American in Cuba: Havana Travel Photos

I flew to Jamaica for my cousins wedding for a week, but the tourist-ridden streets of Ochio Rios left me desiring for adventure. So I hopped aboard a flight bound for Havana alone with no plan or knowledge of possible punishment by the American government. It turned out to be one of the best trips of my life!

Between my junior and senior year at West Virginia University, I had the opportunity to study the history and economics of Cuba, not only by sitting in a classroom in Morgantown, but by actually going to Cuba.  It truly was an experience of a lifetime, and I'm very fortunate to have been able to go.  In a nutshell, we spent some time at the beach (Playa de Santa Maria), we toured Havana (Capitolio, Universidad de la Habana, el Morro, Old Havana, el Malecon, and many o...

Tropicana is THE cabaret show in Havana. It's not exactly cheap; we paid 90 Cuban convertibles (US$90) each for a front row table., including dinner. You get a free half bottle of rum as well. It was an excellent evening out, though. Well worth doing if you're in Havana.

Cuba was great! It was pretty much one big party when we were at the resort, but then when in Havana, it's very historical, and some more partying. I had heard before I had left that the food isn't good in Cuba, but at the resort I was at (Tryp Peninsula) the food was really good. The beaches are awesome in Varadero, and the people are pretty friendly. Over all a great time.
