Going for a drive…from the lush, green and picturesque areas surrounding Rondebush over to the wide sandy beaches of Camps Bay. One bar next to another, coffee shop lined up like pearls on a necklace. The engine is roaring once the sea is only an image in the mirror that is slowly fading away and the yellow Ford Cortina climbs up the steep mountains. Another turn, another mountain we are moving slower and slower, the needle on the speedometer moving downwards like a candle slowly burning do...

Howzit, Aloha and Bonjour! This was my first taste of Africa -I have to tell you, the place moves you! Once you've been it will stay with you forever. I went on an overland trip starting in Cape Town and we finished in Jo'burg.

If there's anyplace I call home, I guess this town is it. It's on the edge of a bay called False Bay. I reckoned they called it False Bay becuase sailors of old would actually be looking for Table Bay, but then take the wrong corner and end up on the wrong side of the mountain. Potentially embarrassing for your global explorer. To me, I enjoy the mountains. We storm up them at every opportunity, to stretch the legs, get the heart rate up and just in general get a view with lunch.

After surveying the weather prospects for the coming days, we realised that the dream of hitting the open road on a motorbike was perhaps a little unrealistic. Especially when it came to luggage considerations - would a single malt be a better bet against the rain and cold than a jersey? Would we need a change of dry clothes, or could we rely on body heat to steam ourselves dry? Africa is just an amazing continent. I had the opportunity to stay from December 07 to January 08 traveling around South Africa, Zambia and Botswana. This blog is just about this fantastic trip that everyone in this planet should go one day.

At the end of the week, we were still without somewhere to stay on the Saturday night. We'd decided that we wanted to pace ourselves with driving, remembering the roadworks of the previous year, and overnight somewhere roughly midway to our first serious destination. That would be Heidelberg. After a couple of earlier dead ends, we decided to take the sensible approach and ask Dr Google. And so we came upon Skeiding, and happily they had room. 

I shipped my Land Rover Discovery to Cape Town and three months later I parked it for a while in Livingstone, Zambia. Along the way I travelled through South Africa, Leshoto, Swaziland, Namibia and Botswana.

Travel blog of Toby and Nicole. The plan is: First one month in France, then we fly into Mexico City, make our way down south through the continent, hop over to Cuba along the way and fly out of Sao Paulo 11 months later.
