From Galle we headed to Ella. We got a bus from Galle to Matara where we changed buses. We were able to find a minibus going from there direct to Ella, in the highlands. It was a journey of several hours. By the time we arrived in Ella the weather had taken a turn for the worse, and there was a torrential downpour. We got very wet searching for somewhere to stay in Ella, but eventually found a room for 500 rupees. There seemed to be a great variation in the prices that people were quoting us...

A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 sq. m) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues.
