From Galle we headed to Ella. We got a bus from Galle to Matara where we changed buses. We were able to find a minibus going from there direct to Ella, in the highlands. It was a journey of several hours. By the time we arrived in Ella the weather had taken a turn for the worse, and there was a torrential downpour. We got very wet searching for somewhere to stay in Ella, but eventually found a room for 500 rupees. There seemed to be a great variation in the prices that people were quoting us…

A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 sq. m) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues.

This is one of the most amazing countries I have ever been to....
