Durban
posted by:

May 30th The feelings I experienced while stepping off the plane for the first time in Africa were quite overwhelming. It was my 5th continent to visit and I was ready to explore with my Lonely Planet guide in my hand (even though I was incredibly jet lagged)! I could not stop looking out the window of my coach on the way to the hotel. Durban was a very green city. It was a delight to see so much land presently uncultivated. The city was made up of a province called KwaZulu-Natal, which w...

Sani Pass

The entire track going from Mokhotlong to Sani Pass is very scenic, but that section between the highest point at 3200m and Sani Pass (2875m) is just amazing. The only people that I saw were a couple of friendly shepherds looking after their sheep. I arrived at Sani Pass around 11.30, before the organized tours bring small groups of tourists from the South African side. They will take you up here in 4x4’s from Underberg or Himeville and it is possible to stay for the night at Sani Top...

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park
posted by:
Jan 10, 2007 - Feb 01, 2007

Diving on the Aliwal Shoal
posted by:
Jan 01, 2007 - Oct 24, 2007
Last Sunday I spent the day scuba diving on the Aliwal Shoal which is a point off the southern coast of Kwa-zulu Natal near the town of Scottburgh. It's about an hour's drive south Durban. The Aliwal Shoal is named after the Aliwal, a British ship that ran into trouble there about a hundred or so years ago. The shoal is also famous for being home to a Ragged Tooth Sharks - or "Raggies"- a docile group that can be found in the winter months (i.e. June and July here). Since this is techn...
