The Eastern Cape is one of the poorer provinces within South Africa, but not in terms of natural beauty. There are some great places including Port Elizabeth, Kenton-on-Sea, Jeffries Bay (world renowned surf spot), Addo Elephant Park, Grahamstown (where the annual Arts festival happens at the beginning of July), and Shamwari Game Reserve (where Tiger Woods and other top celebrities go to see big game).

Today we leave early, because we've got a long way to go and we don't want to miss out on anything this country has to offer. We head for Pretoria, a town that houses the largest university for written education in the world. But, more important for us is the Voortrekkermonument that stands just outside the city, where we arrive at 7.45 am. It is a huge structure that is made of thousands of relatively small granite building blocks and that took twelve years to complete. 64 ox carts surround ...

We spent yesterday in Port Elizabeth, and as we were staying close to the beach we didn't stray far from there.  It was a lovely, warm day so we strolled along the seafront and sat on the beach for a while, watching the locals play football.  We discovered a few craft stalls on the waterfront and made a couple of purchases.  Our souvenir buying has increased recently as we have bought an extra bag exactly for this purpose - we are no longer lightweight travellers - not sure rea...

Kindness in Action is a international team of both dental and nondental people. They provide free dentistry around the world to those who either don't have access, or can't afford it. This year we were fortunate to go to South Africa and work in the village of Ndwana. KIA has been working with another Canadian charity group -Edzimkulu- which is a society to help children with AIDS. Here are some pictures of our work in the village and our adventures along the way.
