Durbuy is situated on two sides of the river 'Ourthe'. In the past, I went kayaking on this river. The many rapids make it an adventurous undertaking. In the last couple of days, a lot of rain has fallen as well as 10cm of snow, all of which has melted. This made the river run even more rapid. Too bad one cannot catch that on a still picture. The typical Ardennes grey stone is the choice of building material here in Durbuy. This, on a grey and rainy November 11, made it hard to take co...

The battle of the Ardennes or the battle of the bulge as it was better know was the last major offensive by the Hitler during WWII. This epic battle was dramatized by the HBO series Band of Brothers but it was more than a series or drama for the men who lived it....It was life and death. The German plans were to cut the Allies in half, take the city of Antwerp and then encircle the allied Armies and force them to make a peace treaty or face death. The problem was the bitter cold.....It was a...

Starttimes where early again so we didn't pack all our things before the competition but decided to go back afterwards. Or at least we would go back by car and my father would leave earlier with the camper. My competition was the best out of three but still didn't go very well (a few weeks later I found out I had anaemia). After the competition we did another geocache, this was a quite scary one inside an old watertower. We had to go all the way up, and a part of the stairs there wasn'...

About Vielsalm: It's a beautiful place with loads of nature. Good for all kinds of outdoors activities. Like mountainbiking, hiking, rafting, climbing .. We had loads of fun doing this, but other than that it can get a little boring in Vielsalm. As you can see in the pictures we managed to keep from going crazy (or maybe, we went crazy but liked it?) by keeping ourselves busy. So vielsalm can be great if you don't mind being a little bored in the evenings after an active day outside.

Houffalize

For the 80th Birthday of my grand mother, we had rented a house in the Belgium Ardennes in January 2006. It's only a 3 hours drive from home but it feels realy like a holiday. This part of Belgium is quite hilly. The people here do speak French. There are very nice places to go to like Dinant, Namur and Bastogne. In the winter there might be a possibility of skiing. During the summer you can do a lot of outdoor sports like hikinh, climbing, canoeing.

Overnight in Libramont

Stayed in a Best Western hotel for 112Euro a night. Poor nick was stuck on a foldout bed and we could only just fit the cot in also. Compared to the accomdation at the Pension Cascata in Saarburg... this one sucked bad. Anyhoo, we are just about desperate for a clothes wash but this little town is... well.... a little town. No laveries here. Most of the day was spent in the car and staring at fog. Saw some nice bits along the way though, heading back to France.

Durbuy, the smallest city on earth?
posted by:
Apr 27, 2008
According to the signs, Durbuy should be the world's smallest city. Durbuy is a beautiful and small city, but to my knowledge it's not the smallest city in the world! The world's smallest city should be Bronkhorst near the river IJssel in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Bronkhorst, with it's 150 inhabitants, received it's municipal rights in 1482. However, Durbuy is a great place to spend some time, visiting all the shops in the narrow streets, lying down alongside the river Ourthe or ...
