Prince of Wales Singapore Reviews
Prince of Wales Feb 14, 2013
I entered this hostel because of the deal that they had (walk in pays 2 nights and gets one free with one complimentary beer), leaving perfectly good hostel couple of buildings away. Price for dorm is 22$ per night. Prince of Wales is totally solid hostel, a bit of wanna be party central and catering mostly younger European guys that like British pub atmosphere.
There are few issues with the place but they are not something that you can’t overcome as a backpacker and you can find it enjoyable. There is one huge dorm kind of divided with walls so if you have sleeping issues, this is not going to help. On the other hand fans and air-conditioning in the room are pretty loud so you won’t hear much of surround noise. Beds are covered with plastic to minimize chance of bad bugs enjoying the same place for free. Linen is super clean and beds are sturdy metal construction. Aside of clean linens, dorm is fairly smelly and walls a crumbling a bit because of the moisture. My bag was leaning on the wall and it got super wet and dirty. Under the dorm is bar with beer garden where some good musicians play almost every night. Bar is on the first floor and bar customers are sharing restrooms with hostel guests which becomes cluster of damn ugly place you won’t like to go. But there is another restroom that you can share with girls… There is no bathroom available for people staying in dorm on the second floor, but I have seen that private rooms have one in their area. You will have to go downstairs every time, which is hustle at night or while bar is working. Showers are plenty and also on the first floor. I was struggling a bit to find the way to let cold water flow… but in the end I got used to a bit hotter shower.
Breakfast is served only between 9 and 10:30 in the morning and it is not that bad because you can make your own eggs, use toaster, have some sweet spreads and sometimes fruit. It is served in the beer garden which is surprisingly clean and quiet at that time in the morning. They also have washing and drying machines that cost all together 5$ per load. WiFi is available all over the hostel and they have two routers that give you fairly good signal.
Bar is incredibly expensive with beers starting from 6$ to whatever… Food is equally expensive, but I have seen advert that all people that stay in hostel have 50% off any meals over the counter. Meals are averaging 14$, so half of that is not that bad. Staff is very helpful, nice and will try to make your stay as pleasant as possible. I came here after great hostel where I spent first few days and it was a bit of shock, or better to say huge difference in hostel style. After second day I understood that “standard” for good hostel can fluctuate in the range of styles…
There are no security cameras and it is very easy to walk in the dorm and do whatever someone likes to do while bar is open. Now, that is minimal issue in Singapore because here people do not steel, but it would be good to have at least one on the only stairs going to the second floor.
