Preveli Palm Beach
Preveli Palm Beach Reviews
Preveli Palm Beach Hiking and Driving Adventure May 20, 2010
To the East of Plakias, Greece on the Island of Crete is Preveli Palm Beach. At the end of the long rock/dirt roads through the mountains is a sandy beach with rock outcroppings and a short 1km but steep climibing/hicking path cut out of the rocks to Palm Beach of Preveli. Preveli Palm Beach is a really cool beach at the end of a stream that runs into the ocean. There are many tourists and locals who have umbrellas and lounge chairs on this Palm Beach with limited access and mountains on both sides of the stream. There are also some small tourist shops that sell food/drink items as well for a nice beach picnic.
The short but strenuous climb/hike does not require tools but can get narrow in places. Be sure to bring water with you as it is near desert conditions until you get down to the beach with lush palm trees and a large sandbar along the mouth of the stream.
Be careful on the drive to the beach--usually 1-lane with steep drop offs and occasional oncoming traffic encounters or wild mountian goats. Still, it is worth the drive and hike with the reward of a beautiful palm-lined beach which is not crowded in a natural setting.
