Prespa Vacation Guide
Situated on the north-western borders of Greece with its neighbours Albania, and F.Y.R. of Macedonia, at the heart of the Balkans, Prespa is a place where a unique natural environment coexists with notable Byzantine monuments and a small agricultural community which has persevered through the tides of time.
The region is a lake basin consisting of two lakes Megali and Mikri Prespa surrounded by a bowl of mountains and connected by underground watercourses to the neighbouring Lake Ohrid.
Prespa is home to an astonishing range of animals, birds and plants including a number of species found only here. The mountains are one of the last European homes of European brown bears, wolves, chamois and wild boar whilst the lake hosts breeding colonies of Dalmatian and white pelicans as well as pygmy cormorants.
Prespa is also home to an array of cultural wealth. Among the Byzantine and post Byzantine monuments are churches, monasteries, hermitages and rock paintings dating from the 10th century onwards. Unique within Greece are the traditional methods of fishing, producing and preserving food as well as a local species of dwarf cattle.
Prespa is a testament to man and nature living side by side for centuries, home to ways of life rarely seen in modern Europe. It is a peaceful natural setting that gives the impression of having remained unchanged since time immemorial
