A beautiful village hidden from the world Jul 15, 2008
Prettau as it is known to the locals is found in the far reaches of the Italian Alps and is more or less in Austria, except for the fact that everything is bilingual! However, the locals all speak German as their first language and in fact the local dialect is one of the oldest forms of German still spoken.
It is a quaint town with typically Austrian buildings and is famed for having Pope John Paul II visit in the mid 1990s.
There is a ski resort in the village but the best reason (I think) for visiting is taking in the beautiful drive there and experiencing the natural beauty and architecture of Prettau!
There is also a mine that can be visited St.-Ignaz Erbstollen (Galleria Base St.-Ignaz). A small train takes you deep into the mountains and there is a guided tour available.
