Prapat Vacation Guide
Prapat (or Parapat) is a town in North Sumatra that sits on the eastern shore of Lake Toba (Danau Toba). A four hour bus ride from the provincial capital Medan or a fourteen hour bus ride from West Sumatra's Bukittinggi, Prapat is the gateway to tourism activities in Lake Toba.
Buses travelling along the Trans-Sumatra Highway often stop here for breaks or to let passengers out. From the highway, where there is a stretch of restaurants, stores, and cheap accommodation, visitors normally take a taxi into the older part of town, where larger and more expensive resorts sit on the lakeside. Restaurants and stores are numerous in the old part of town, and there is always a flourish of activity near the ferry launch site. Prapat is usually more popular with domestic tourists or day-trippers from Medan as it is a cheaper alternative to the resorts and restaurants on Samosir Island.
