Praça do Giraldo Evora Reviews
The main square Sep 11, 2010
Praça do Giraldo is Évora’s main square. There are many terraces and it is a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike. At the eastern side of the square are beautiful Moorish arcades and there is the Fonte Henriquima fountain that dates from 1570.
Behind the Fonte Henriquima fountain stands the solemn Igreja de Santo Antão, a typical example of the stern and gloomy architecture in the period of the Inquisition. On September 23rd 1543 a crowd had gathered on this same square to see how six ‘heretics’ were burned on the stakes because the church couldn’t do anything more for these ‘lost souls’.
Important to know is that an office of tourist information is located right at this square. If you like to visit the amazing ancient menhirs that are located in the vicinity of Évora, a map from this tourist information office is quite essential, since they are hard to find!
