Potsdamer Platz Sep 17, 2012
The square located right where there used to be a city gate leading for the road leading to Potsdam. This is how the square got its name - after the city of Potsdam. As the city grew the area moved from being at the entry to the city to be in the central part of the city. Before WW II it was an important square and there was a lot of traffic - hence this is the location where one of the two first traffic lights of continental Europe was erected in 1924.

The glory days of the square didn’t last long. During WW II the square was pretty much left in rubbles. And after the wall the square found itself at the border between East and West. The Berlin Wall divided the city right at the square. Hence the square lay idle in no-man land for decades until the wall finally came tumbling down in 1989.

After the reunification of Berlin the square quickly regained a lot of its former glory. For an about a decade it was home to more construction cranes than anywhere else in Europe and new buildings sprung up all around the square. So today it is home to many major buildings of all sorts.

Potsdamer platz was a buzzing part of Berlin before in the turn into the 20th century and it has also become a buzzing part of Berlin on the turn to the 21th century. In between it has been in rubble , separated by the Berlin Wall and been underinvested for many many years.

Today Potsdamer platz is one of the most modern places in Berlin with several skyscrapers and the amazing dome at the Sony Center. Potsdamer platz (Translated Potsdamer Square) is mainly a pedestrian area with street performers , stalls that sells tourist items , gluehwein , Bratwurst and so on. In wintertimes there is possibilities to use an ice skating rink and other activities.

A must see , just even for wandering around for a couple of hours. There are many nice museum nearby , including the Film and TV museum. There are also cinamas that send movies in their original languages here , something that can be hard to find in Germany

It's hard to believe that this gigantic, sprawling shopping area used to be rubble after World War II. It was rebuilt starting in 1990, and the plaza is now home to numerous, giant modern buildings that house a variety of shops and theaters. There is usually some sort of performance going on here - my friends and I saw the Blue Man Group, of Intel commercial fame - so it might be worth checking the schedule to see if any bands or artists are stopping by.
