Potato Fest Ebensburg Reviews
take a ride on the Tater Express Sep 27, 2008
PotatoFest is thrown annually to celebrate the potato growers in the State...currently Cambria County (which is the county Ebensburg is in) is the 2nd largest potato growers int he state. And today was a PERFECT Pennsylvania day for a festival---well, more like typical. The weater was about 65 degrees F, the sky was over cast and it was misting (not raining...just mist).
When I got here I didn't know what to expect... I found a parking spot about a block and a half away...but they also had shuttle points from places around town called the "Tater Express"... so I guess that's why we could find parking. But my mom and I walked up the street to where the roads were blocked off and we just saw a mass of people. The festival looked small at first but then we saw that it went onto other streets than the one we were initially on... and as we were driving away we found out that we missed a section.
There were a couple of things I was excited to see... one was eating sweet potato french fries, the other was seeing the Miss Tater/Mr Tot children pagent, mashed potato hunt, potato sack race and seeing some of the crafts. But what I did get was seeing TONS of crafts, eat sweet potato fries, sweet potato ice cream, sweet potato tarts, sweet potato scones, apple pie ice cream, cinnamon roll bread, honey and honey stix, maple syrup covered almonds, beef and turkey jerky, clowns and an elvis impersonator... I totally could not find the pagent, sack race or mashed potato hunt (though I still want to know what it is).
Things to notice: This town loves GOBS (otherwise known as moon pies)... they had them everywhere and as traditional, sweet potato, and Peanut Butter! It was crazy... and the crafts were interesting...you could get everything from lawn ornaments, to soy candles, to pot holders and towels, scarves made from alpaca fur, to little outfits...including some that look like they're amish but made with sporting teams logos (espcially Steelers and PSU).
The day was fun... it actually took time to go see everything---we were there for 2 hours and still ended up missing stuff... all the other festivals I've been to I usually am done with it within a half hour or so! So I highly recomend it!
