Posedarje Vacation Guide

Beautifully located at the northwest shore of the Sea of Novigrad ("Novigradsko More"), Posedarje is a little village of 1.500 inhabitans. It is a municipal center with all amenities one needs: several stores, a bank, a clinic with 24-hours-emergency-unit, a pharmacy, a post office, a mechanic, hotels, restaurants and cafes. It is easily to be reached by the coastal road and the Highway. The nearest big city is Zadar, only 25 km away.
Though the village is striving to become a popular tourist place, it is still far from it. Basically, people make their living in other working branches, but almost every house has apartments and rooms for rent. There are a couple of little boarding houses, the town has a beach and seaside promenade.
The history of Posedarje goes way back into the middle ages, mostly known as the property of the noble Croatian family of the princes Posedarski. The early-croatian church of St. Mary in the park is one of the remains of past days. More recent are the stone houses built in the traditional dalmatian style you can find all over the place, but most of them are uninhabited.
A popular attraction of Posedarje is the artistic place "Čelinka", located on a hill above the village. Posedarje is also famous for its 'Pršut', the smoked ham, one of, if not the best on the market. Other local products are brandies and wine, and at the fishmarket you may find fresh fish in the mornings.
The offer of restaurants and places to go out is poor, the choice of meals being standard. Usually on the 2nd saturday of August the local feast takes place, with the traditional donkey-race and an open air concert.
Outside Posedarje, on the other side of the harbour, is the bay of 'Sveti Duh', named after the little church dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The church stands on a little island connected to the mainland by a dam. Every Whitsunday church service is held there, open air, with the parishioners driving to the island in a procession of decorated boats. Otherwise the church is closed. The bay is shallow and muddy, and the warm water and mud supposedly help with rheumatic diseases. A couple of years ago a beach bar has opened on the beach becoming a popular nightlife spot for the youth, and a threat to the environment.
All in all, Posedarje might be perfect for a tourist looking for peace and quite, and with no high expectations. The lack of touristy amenities and venues here is replaced by the hospitality and friendliness of the people.

Several years ago brothers Vinko and Mihovil Kajmak decided to make a pledge by their own. Their parents were natives of Posedarje, but spent most of their lives in northern Croatia, the nostalgia for home never ceasing. I don't know the whole story, but I remember the time the brothers first came …
