Posana Asheville Reviews
Pretty Bland Dec 24, 2015
An upscale eatery located at Pack Square in the heart of Asheville, Posana impressed on every front except for taste (as in flavor, certainly not décor). The house was packed on Christmas Eve, but we were escorted to their “overflow” back room immediately. Though not as elegantly decorated as the main dining hall, it was still lovely and we appreciated dodging a wait.
Posana (apparently a Sanskrit word for ‘nourishing’) certainly walks the walk. As just expressed, the interior is exquisitely appointed, featuring a beautiful bar and plenty of tasteful art pieces adorning the walls. Unsurprisingly, they are an ecologically conscious provider, sourcing locally and allowing that availability guide menu offerings. The menu featured wondrous descriptions of possibilities like a Rabbit Pasta appetizer and Grilled Scottish Salmon entrée. Topping it off was excellent service, which was polite, polished and knowledgeable (too often the missing ingredient).
We ordered and eagerly awaited a splendid dining experience, only to be somewhat disappointed. I went for their Mushroom Soup (garlic, chives, truffle butter) and Sunburst Farms Trout (quinoa, beets, fennel, almonds, pumpkin puree, citrus dressing). Presentation was top shelf, everything looked wonderful, and although everything was good, it sadly lacked any pizazz. I was disappointed with the lack of any savor in my Mushroom Soup, and shared a taste with Laura and Sandy to receive similar feedback. Ditto with the main course. And worse yet, everyone traded “bite for a bite” to replay the verdict --- no wow factor in anything we had ordered. Don’t get me wrong, everything was fresh and “good,” but given the atmosphere and cost there was an expectation of something memorable.
I hate to condemn what seems to be an award winning establishment, but the group consensus from sampling three different main selections is a bland experience. That said, their wine rack was enormous and they apparently have a fine reputation on that front. In addition, they clamored about their inventive mixed drinks, so perhaps we should have simply swung by during happy hour.
