Arriving into Portugal
posted by:
Sep 01, 2007 - Jan 31, 2008
What a wonderful and hectic last day I had! After a morning of work, a picnic by the river and a bus ride into Porto, we were greeted by a really crappy hotel. I can't even call it a hotel it was more like a hostel. My guard went up instantly as I tried to enter my hotel room and the lock was broken and there was a used towel on the floor. The carpet was stained and there was this awful musty smell that I couldn't bear. It seemed as if someone broken the door lock in order to use the room whe...

@ 19h20 [7:20pm] - at the Airport Just arrived at the airport a few minutes ago! Waiting for JV and his father... I get a little tense… the last few days went running, meaning I was the one running to do all the late stuff, even though today was a completely stressful one!!! Trying to get all the stuff I had in two “little” bags! Yes, in the last days I realised that the bags definitely got shorter from the last time I used them ;-) but today they suddenly got minuscule :-( ...

Travelling - Discovering myself. :o))

Do you know this warm craving which makes you wanna explore? Dou you know this child-like giddiness when collecting the data before your trip. While diving into the vast Internet world you think of all the places you are going to visit; all the sunsets you are going to witness, coffee flavours you are going to experience…   Completely robbed in Barcelona :o))) where I started my trip I found a new, lazy summery world. There I was - absorbing the heat of the busy streets, grasping sh...

Faial

After arriving at the airport on Faial and collecting our luggage (which thankfully had not ventured to another airport) we were taken by Taxi to our hotel.  That evening we had time for a quick walk down the main street and a meal at Peters Bar, apparently a famous restaurant. Breakfast was provided for us at the hotel and there was a huge selection including bacon and egg, cereal, fruit, bread and yoghurt.  I opted for my standard bowl of cereal with plenty of milk most days. On...

"Come on guys, it's my birthday and it's time to eat…" I yelled full of courage. Because my birthday is in the heart of summer, I usually celebrate it abroad. Not out of extravagance but simply because most times I'm on vacation. We were touring the west and south coast of Europe. It was an interrail trip. With an open ticket you can get on and off every train, whenever and wherever you like. For the expenses while traveling, I'd taken on an extra job. But you know how it goes, in th...

The Legend of Our Lady of Salto
posted by:
Oct 13, 2007
There are many versions for this legend, but the best known is the one of a knight who, in a morning of fog, was chasing a deer (some versions say it was a hare) in the Sousa River’s Hell's Heights. The deer - representing the Devil in disguised - was running towards the abyss, trying to fool the knight. His horse got scared and when the knight notice it was too late and they were already over the cliff at Sousa River’s Hell. The knight didn’t have time to stop and shout as a p...

FADO IS PORTUGAL
posted by:
Nov 14, 2006
Fado is Portugal’s folk music, the very 1st time I heard it was a song called 'Coisas Pequenas' by Madredeus. I am so angry at that time because my date stood me up, I was outside FNAC in Oporto in North Portugal and this song was playing, suddenly I feel relaxed and I listened closely. My anger went away, and I smiled. No other music have that kind of effect on me, so I guess that is good therapy for me! And from that day, I became a fan of Madredeus and Fado music. The music brough...

Faial   Horta is a lively place where you find a lot of sailers. Sometimes the Açores are for them the first time they see land after sailing for days / weeks. The sailers make colourful paintings in the harbour. Peter Café Sport is a very famous café, which is a nice place to go out for a drink in the evening.   Swimming with dolphins; I was looking foward to do that. I was naïve. Why would wild dolphins swim with people? Far away from the coast we find a group of dolp...
