Portlaoise has developed rapidly in the last 15 years. Numerous new housing and comercial developments have sprung up and the town now boasts excellent shopping, educational and sports facilities with severl new shoping areas, a newly completed college and new schools, and a state of the art lesuire complex. Its population has benefitted from the influx of many eastern European and African migrants which have added greatly to the cultural diversity. It has by no means lost its Irish charm though and features over 25 pubs, three nightclubs, severl live music venues and a well appointed arts centre. For a small town it is very well appointed with restaurants featuring European, Chinese, Indian and other cuisines
As a place to travel it is very usefull as a hub to explore the midlands from or as a stopover on the way to the west or south of the country.
