Navy Days

I was in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm as a helicopter engineer.  I joined in December 1983 and served until March 1989.  I Was mainly based in Portland, Dorset on the south coast of England.   The Air station no longer exists and the area has been redeveloped into the national sailing academy and will be hosting the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics.  During this time I managed to get around the UK and on a few trips overseas.  I went to Cadiz in Spain, Lisb…

Suffice to say that we wil NOT be coming in summer!  One sunny day and the entire population of the UK seemed to be heading South.  Understandable - we were too - but golly I'd forgotten how much I hate holiday traffic!  So we were both relieved to see Portland up ahead. Portland is in essence an island, connected to the mainland by a spit of land attatched to Chessil Beach.&nbs…

Portland Bill

I first followed a coast path, climbing quite high to have a nice view of the town. It was built with a light stone, the town center is very picturesque. Then, I drove to the Isle of Portland to see Portland Bill. I saw pictures of it before, and it looked amazing so I wanted to check it myself! I really like that place. It was very quiet, only few tourists and some people fishing. The landscape with rocks is not something I am used to so it was a great experience to see that! &nb…
