Port Louis Overview

The history of Port Louis first starts at the eighteenth century when the French took possession of the island. As a tribute for their King, Louis XV, the French settlers named the region as “Port North- West” and with time, it was renamed as “Port Louis”.

Port Louis is the largest city in Mauritius, located in the western part of the main island. The island's capital is a mix of countries and cultures, with flashes of India, Africa, Europe, and South-East Asia. With its daily heavy traffic, humidity and heat, Port Louis is not the ideal city to live in but it walls shelter almost 200 000 people. There are not that many reasons to come here but if you will decide to come, it can be a good place to take the pulse of the country and to see the other face of the island's which is known mostly because of its resorts and private beaches. There are some ethnic quarters and some wonderfully preserved colonial buildings. The most pretty part of the city is Le Caudan Waterfront. In Port Louis you can find also Aapravasi Ghat which is labeled as UNESCO.
